Reading Comprehension #1 - English for Bank exams

Reading Comprehension for IBPS, SBI, RBI, IPPB, LIC exams

Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words have been printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

By coach, by train, by ship and by plane, millions of tourists annually depart from home like migrating summer birds. They provide the best possible evidence to prove that the world is not really as big as it used to be. For the modern tourist is no Marco Polo. He ventures forth into the unknown and returns home in a matter weeks and years. Furthermore, he is armed with pamphlets, maps and weighty guide books which tell him where to go and how to get there; and where to stay, what to see and what to eat when he arrives. There are travel agencies everywhere to cater for his needs and make all the necessary preparations for him. They make out ambitious programmes and promise to whisk  him through as many as six countries in fourteen days, or if he is in a hurry, they will cover much the same ground in eight or less.
Reading Comprehension English for IBPS, SBI, LIC, RBI, IPPB exams

It is a small wonder that the tourist is a busy man. He no sooner sets foot on foreign soil than he is rushed to his hotel and thence is immediately taken on a conducted tour of the city by night. In the morning he goes through another arduous course of sight-seeing. He has barely had the chance to recover, or indeed, to find out exactly where his hotel is located, before he is off to yet another part of the country. It is not even a bird's eye view he gets. Rather, it is a snapshot view.
