Vocabulary #16 - General English for SBI PO and SBI Clerk, IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk, RBI Grade B officers and RBI Assistant, SSC CGL and UPSC exams


1. Contempt of court: not showing respect for a court or judge
  • Example: Any person who disregards the order will be in contempt of court.
2. Evade: To escape from somebody or something
  • Synonyms: Avoid, Dodge, Deceive, Hide, Waffle
  • Antonyms: Face, Confront, Meet, Take on
  • Example: Responsibility cannot be so easily evaded.
3. Derision: A strong feeling that somebody or something is not worth considering seriously
  • Synonyms: Insult, Contempt, Scorn, Disdain, Laughter
  • Antonyms: Adulation, Compliment, Praise, Flattery, Plaudit, Respect
  • Example: He became an object of universal derision.
4. Scepticism: An attitude of doubting that something will happen
  • Synonyms: Doubt, Leeriness, Reluctance, Uncertainty, Infidelity
  • Antonyms: Belief, Piety, Assurance, Confidence, Reliance
  • Example: The scientists have expressed scepticism about these results.
5. Refrain: To stop yourself from doing something, especially something that you want to do
  • Synonyms: Abstain, Cease, Desist, Give up, Renounce
  • Antonyms: Do, Indulge, Begin, Initiate, Jump in
  • Example: Please refrain from smoking.
6. Adjourn: To stop a meeting or an official process for a period of time
  • Synonyms: Delay, Postpone, Suspend, Recess, Prorogue
  • Antonyms: Begin, Open, Convoke, Reconcile, Forge
  • Example: The trial has been adjourned until next week.
7. Consonance: Formal agreement 
  • Synonyms: Accord, Concord, Harmony, Unison, Bond
  • Antonyms: Dissonance, Incongruity, Disagreement, Discord
  • Example: The policy is popular because of its consonance with law.
8. Abject: Without any pride or respect for yourself
  • Synonyms: Degraded, Survile, Abominable, Cheap, Loathsome
  • Antonyms: Commendable, Noble, Proud, Honest, Moral
  • Example: He made press statements with abject impunity.
9. Impunity: Freedom from punishment
  • Synonyms: Freedom, Exemption, Privilege, Absolution, Exoneration
  • Antonyms: Liability, Imprisonment, Accusation, Sentence, Susceptibility
  • Example: Criminal gangs are terrorising the city eith apparent impunity.
10. Purported: That has been stated to have happened or to be true
  • Synonyms: Claim, Assert, Profess, Suggest, Dubious
  • Antonyms: Certain, Actual, Obscure, Vague, Genuine
  • Example: A recent study into the purported health benefits of the drink was not conclusive
